Abstract

The consequences of the Second World War brought uncertainty and unemployment in the Subcontinent. This resulted in massive migration of the workers from India and Pakistan to the Middle East and Gulf countries who were seeking jobs to earn their living. These workers in spite of comprising of both Muslims and non-Muslims, spoke Urdu as their native language. With the increasing number of these workers and their officers from India and Pakistan, Urdu became almost the Lingua franca of the Gulf countries.  At present people coming from Nepal, Iran, Bangladesh and other eastern countries not only understand Urdu language but also enjoy the poetry and prose produced in Urdu. The present article focuses on the progress of Urdu language in gulf countries and covers the various activities to promote Urdu language and literature in Middle East.
