Abstract

The present study was about analyzing social deixis in Mary Burrills’s one-act play “They That Sit in Darkness” which aimed to explore relational and absolute deixis and explanation of referring expressions based on Theory Cruse (2006) of about pragmatics and Levinson about social Deixis as the proponents of the theory in the one-act play. Note taking technique was opted to collect the data after close reading. The study was delimited to the social deixis in the play as twelve Social relational and four absolute deixis has been found after analyzing the text of the play. Researcher suggests for future researchers to work qualitatively and quantitatively as it only focused on the qualitative aspect of the analysis.
