Abstract

This term is combined from the genitive of the word "plural" and the genitive of the “word breaking in arabic”, which is an additional compound. It appears in many Arabic dictionaries, including Lisan al-Arab by Ibn Manzur. The plural is (plural: collecting something). In Mu'jam-Al-Ayn by Al-Khalil bin Ahmad Al-Farahidi, he says that plural is the plural of separate parts, meaning joining some of them together. So we say that the term plural according to the linguists is what indicates two or more. Lexicographers agree in the definition that the intention of plural is to combine with the intention of conciseness and abbreviation.The terminological concept of the plural differs from the linguistic concept. The plural in terminology is what indicates more than two or two by changing a single form, and it is of three types: “a sound masculine plural, a sound feminine plural, and a plural of crushing.” So we conclude from this that the plural is a noun that indicates more than one. Two by changing a single form, either by adding a (waw) and a noun or a (yaa) and a noun in the masculine form, like Muslim become a  plural of Muslimun, or by adding an alif and a ta’ in the feminine, like a (Muslim), plural of (Muslimat), and in the kasra, a single form is changed, like a book, plural of books.Definition of “word breaking in arabic” linguistically and idiomatically: to break, from the meaning of multiplying: to break, to break. In Lisan al-Arab: to break something is to break it into pieces, so “to breakis an emphasis on abundance.
