Abstract

Krishan Chander (1914-1977) is considered to be one of the most distinguished writers of Urdu fiction. His particular style and themes make him a very popular writers, both in india and Pakistan. His writings are marked by diversity of themes, reality, satire, rebellion and romance. He was deeply interested in literature, and started short stories and novels. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1969.


The Novel “Aik Aurat Hazar Dewaney” brings out all his major qualities as a great artist. Moreover, this novel, in particular, throws light on some aspects of feminism. As a Kean observer of Indian society, Krishan Chandaer shows deep understanding of the problems, exploitation and the intense humiliation faced by the women in the typical male dominant society of the subcontinent. The writer, haring a rebellious, approach focuses on a girl called lachi, who belonged to typical gypsy family. Al the Gypsy girls of that tribe are used to earning money by playing the role of prostitutes, even against their will. Lachi proves to be rebellious and disobeys the particular customs and rules. This novel brings out her sufferings and ultimately her tragic end. This article aims at discussing some important aspects of feminism.
