Abstract

Hind-Islamic civilization, for the last one thousand years, has remained the determining factor in shaping the history, culture, social norms and thought patterns, likes and dislikes and personalities of the people of Indian Sub-Continent. It has also reshaped the content and form of different fine arts like poetry, music, architecture, calligraphy and has infused the spirit of Islam in all genres of Indian literature. Dastan, like Ghazal, is a substantial archive of the vast cultural, ethnic and religious diversity of this home of many nations. This article specifically studies the portrayals of culture and everyday life of the Sub-Continental man in Urdu Dastan. The aim of this article is the make available for the reader the heart and mind of the people of this region which were once imbued with the shared feelings, aspirations, cultural norms nestled and nurtured by a millennia-old social bonding of Hindus and Muslims.
