Abstract

In "Al-Fiqh 'ala al-Madhahib al-Arba'ah," Abd al-Rahman al-Jaziri discusses the issues of relieving oneself and performing istinja' (cleansing after using the toilet) with water or stones according to the four major Islamic schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali). Regarding the act of relieving oneself, all four schools agree on certain etiquettes that must be observed, such as sitting while relieving oneself, avoiding facing the qibla (the direction of Mecca), covering the body, refraining from talking during the act, and choosing a place that is out of public sight. There is also consensus among the four schools that if both water and stones are available, one should first clean with stones and then purify with water, as this ensures greater cleanliness and purification. In this research paper, Abd al-Rahman al-Jaziri’s work "Al-Fiqh 'ala al-Madhahib al-Arba'ah" presents the different opinions of the juristic schools in a comprehensive manner, and the research further investigates and references these views.
