Abstract

Islam establishes a balanced family system where the rights and responsibilities of each individual are clearly defined. The family is a social unit based on principles of love, compassion, and financial support. In Islamic teachings, the concept of nafaqah (financial responsibility) holds great significance to ensure the basic needs of family members are met, leading to social and economic stability. In a patriarchal family system, the head of the household is typically the male, who bears the financial responsibility for his dependents. Islam upholds this principle by assigning the duty of providing nafaqah to the husband, father, son, and, in some cases, other male relatives. The Quran and Hadith provide clear guidance on this matter, ensuring that the rights and obligations of all family members are well-defined. According to Islamic jurisprudence, nafaqah encompasses the provision of essential needs such as food, clothing, housing, healthcare, and other necessary expenses.

Islamic law categorizes financial responsibilities according to different relationships. A husband is obligated to bear all expenses for his wife, regardless of her personal wealth or income. Similarly, a father must ensure the upbringing, education, and welfare of his children until they reach adulthood and become financially independent. If parents become elderly and lack financial support, it becomes the duty of their children to provide for them. Furthermore, if a close relative is in financial distress, the head of the family is obligated to assist them. The concept of nafaqah in Islam is not merely about financial assistance but also serves as a foundation for family stability and social justice. This system provides protection for weaker family members, safeguards wives and children from financial hardships, encourages support for elderly parents and relatives, and fosters love and a sense of responsibility within the family. Hence, the Islamic perspective on nafaqah guarantees a well-structured family system where rights and responsibilities are well defined. In a patriarchal family, the financial duty assigned to the male head of the household is not just a command but also a moral and social obligation. This structure strengthens family stability, promotes mutual empathy, and ensures social justice, thereby laying the foundation for a strong and prosperous society.
