Abstract

Tragedy has always been highly important in oriental poetics. All the great bards have dealt with every aspect of tragedy and its manner in their works because tragedy is an infinite/ never-ending stream which is continuously flowing though this universe and life herein. Temporary nature of life, inability of material objects to last forever and the ultimate apocalypse are such facts that cannot be refuted by any religion, philosophy or any other school of thought. Being connected with the collective conscience of the humans speaking Urdu, Urdu poetry is imbedded with the representation of tragedy to optimum extent. I, through this research article, will analyze the elements of tragedy in different genres (elegy, eulogy, masnavi, ballad, ruin poetry and ghazal) of Urdu poetry.
