Abstract

Islam is the religion of peace and security. Its teachings reflect its temperament. Islam taught the lesson of peace, benevolence and tolerance at a time when darkness, intolerance and hatred were prevailed in the society. Islam envisions the creation of a society in which everyone is bound to be treated with respect and kindness. Human dignity and religious tolerance are at the core of Islam. If we look at the twenty-three years of prophethood, every aspect of Prophet’s life smells of peace and security.

Using both qualitative and quantitative methods in the research, the researcher in the first phase selected the authentic sermons of the Prophet on maintaining peace in a pluralistic society during the Prophet's time. The sermons were compiled on five basic aspects:social, political, ethical, economic, and communalteachings. In the second phase, public opinion was sought on what people know about maintaining peace in the light of Islam. In this regard, the opinion of five hundred people was sought, which included all kinds of people, such as people belonging to education institutions, including teachers, students, scholars, dignitaries, and people who belonged to some profession. Data were collected from urban and rural areas, male and female citizens in district Lahore.

The results of the research revealed that our people do not have the required knowledge about the kindness, rights and duties toward their fellowmen. They do not prefer self-sacrifice, rather give priority to their material interests. Only 50% of people provided correct opinion about the Islamic way of dealing with others. According to the researcher, the education system is the most basic tool for providing information and training, therefore, it should be based on the teachings of Islam mandatorily at all levels.
