In Islam, social life is based on Nikah (marriage) which is a sacred religious contract. This
sacred contract has multiple objectives in an Islamic society: couples fulfil their sexual
desires in lawful way, seek inner comfort and peace, human life comes into existence,
children are brought up and educated under parental care. Islam has made marriages very
simple and easy so that people may get into this social contract of marriage and pass happy
and healthy lives. Unfortunately, in our society marriages witness unnecessary
expenditures. A survey is conducted in rural areas of district Kotli, Azad Jammu & Kashmir
(A J&K). Results of the survey indicate that a wedding ceremony in a poor family costs
more than eight to ten lac, a middle-class family spends approximately fifteen to twenty lac
rupees on a wedding function, while a rich family spends more than 5 million rupees on this
function. It has been observed that people make lavish expenditures on marriages due to
their ignorance regarding Islamic teachings in this context and unnecessary societal
traditions. As a result, heavy amount of wealth is destroyed and those who cannot afford
these unnecessary expenditures and financial burden may remain unmarried & indulge in
immoral acts, poor are overburdened with loans which result in stress, anger and anxiety
that may lead to depression. Daring steps are needed to be taken in order to control
tendency of making unnecessary expenses on weddings so that people may cherish this
Sunnah of Nikah and spend their lives according to teachings of Islam
