Traces of Fear, Dread, and Phobia in Classical Urdu Poetry

Abstract

Thematic diversity can be seen in every era of Urdu poetry but the illustration and explanation of such
themes is carried out with the passage of time in light of other disciplines. Fear, fright and phobia are
important terminologies in psychology. In Urdu poetry—the classical period in particular—the poets
express their perceptions and imperceptions in a variety of manners. The poet is ensnared by different
types of fear; i.e., paranoia, gloom, loneliness, abandonment, wilderness, bloodshed, and dissociation
to name a few. On one hand there is the fear of separation from the Mehboob, on the other hand, there
is hesitance to express malice towards the Raqeeb in fear of outrage from the Mehboob thus the poet
often lives in a state of dilemma. In this research article, this leitmotif is succinctly portrayed in
accordance with classical poetry.
