Abstract

Mahiya is a Punjabi genre of poetry. In it, the poet recites poetry in memory of his beloved. Urdu mahia
came into existence from Punjabi mahiya. It also has the same essence and emotions which are the identity of
Punjabi mahiya.Urdu mahiya has a strong tradition and now Urdu poets all over the world are writing mahiya
because it has great potential to express human emotions. The main character of the mahiya is the “Mahi”. The
subject of love is most prominent in the one who is beloved but there is no gender discrimination.
