Abstract

Poetry has always been a topic of debates amongst critics of every age in all parts of the world. What exactly is it? How can it be a useful for contemporary society? Is it just an entertainment for a few moments or it can influence the people seriously? In spite of being “media” in the past, can it be taken as an important tool to propagate certain ideas? These are the questions behind this article. It is a humble effort to find answers of these questions. Starting from Plato and coming to the utilitarian theory of 19th century, there are many objections on poetry and many justifications in its favor. Some of these are discussed here.
